Working in South Korea was simply one of the best experiences of my life. I was able to travel the small country, learn tons about a culture that was hugely different from my own, eat fantastic food, meet awesome people and ofcourse help children learn English (which was sublimly rewarding).

I worked at a Hagwon (which are privatly owned schools that operate in the afternoon and early evening) and taught children from the 6-14. I loved the kids and I was given the freedom to come up with my own teaching materials and techniques (which isn't the case everwhere...some places give you distinct guidelines but I loved the freedom). I fell in love with my kids and am still in contact with some of them.

But Korea wasn't only about the teaching it was also about learning about a country that was so vastly different from my own. I learnt basic Korean and how to read which felt so rewarding.

Because South Korea is so cheap it also opened up so many doors to having a fantastic social life. Most nights were filled with friends, good food and on weekends good drink (although I don't know if I should be classifying Soju as good).

Because I was free on weekends it left me with a lot of time and opportunity to travel. I explored Korea from top to bottom and went to an array of festivals. As the months went by I fell further in love with the country and found it difficult to leave.

As with most things there are some negatives but I must be honest there were very few for me in Korea and many simply related to different cultural preferences not working culture.

If you are thinking of teaching abroad consider South Korea...it's different, it's cheap, it pays well and you get to meet tons of awesome people! Again, one of the best things I've EVER done!
