Program Description
ProWorld - Teach English to Tibetan Refugees in Nepal
Description
The Tibetan minorities in Nepal face numerous obstacles in their daily lives, ranging from poverty and low literacy levels to discrimination and legal uncertainty. Many do not have a residency card, which restricts their daily life to the extent where they cannot get a driver’s license and their children cannot attend public school. Furthermore, many initiatives to improve their situation are blocked or complicated by political issues.
Luckily ProWorld has a program to help teach much-needed English and business skills to those looking for a better life.
As a volunteer, you'll be able to make a difference by helping in the following ways:
--Teach English to adults
--Help in administration and marketing of the organization
--Manage the website and job-placement database
--Organize and conduct workshops for the Tibetan community
Highlights
Nepal, officially the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, is the world's youngest republic. Home to an incredible geographic landscape, Nepal contains eight of the world's ten highest mountains, including Mount Everest. Its geographic landscape is matched by it's cultural richness - from spicy Nepalese cuisine to Newari music and dancing to traditional folklore to the over 92 different living languages spoken throughout the country.
Nepal offers a wonder of sounds, sounds and smells for those visiting. In Kathmandu, there is plenty of exploration to be had in and around the city and the valley.
Some popular volunteer excursions include:
--World Heritage site tours
--Visits to Hindu and Buddhist temples, and the Royal Palace
--Trekking to Everest Base Camp
--Jungle trips to Chitwan Preserve
