Program Description

ProWorld - Volunteer Teaching Programs in Mexico

Description

Community centers are hard to find in Oaxaca, so ProWorld sponsored one. With a roster of computer classes, literacy seminars, and sports programs, the center provides a gathering place where locals can learn and play together. This is just one step in the road out of poverty and ProWorld needs your help in the strategic planning to make this community center a catalyst for growth and development.

You’d be assigned to:

Find a diverse funding base for the organization
Develop the organization’s strategic plan
Assist the organization in identifying and solving organizational behavior issues
Grant writing and fundraising
Assist in the development of a professional website
Teach English and computer literacy
Intermediate Spanish required and a background in organizational planning or fundraising helpful.

Highlights

One of Mexico’s most beautiful and lively cities, Oaxaca is the heart of the south and is known for its artists, craftsmen, archaeological sites, colonial churches, and charming ambiance. Home to 3.5 million people, a full 32% are indigenous, the largest population of any Mexican state. Despite its beauty, Oaxaca is the poorest state in Mexico, with fringe settlements of migrant workers living in abject poverty.
With an average 311 days of sun year round, Oaxaca is temperate and humid. Temperatures vary by terrain, with an average high in the 90ºs, and an average low of 41º in the valleys and a balmy 77º in the plains.

Intensive Language Training Option:

Not exactly sure how to say "coral bleaching" or "dual biopsy" in Spanish? Jumpstart your internship with our pre-service Spanish Language Intensive!
Interns at our Peru and Mexico sites can sign up for intensive Spanish classes for up to four weeks before their program begins. Immersive classes daily will put you on the fast track to fluency. Morning sessions will cover basic vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, and conversation. The afternoon session will focus on vocabulary specific to your project (medical, environmental, small business, etc.).

Weekends are yours for exploring this mystical country. Some of our intern favorites are:

A visit to the many art fairs and shops in Oaxaca
Cycling or hiking in the nearby foothills
Exploring the Zapotec ruins
Road trip to the beach
Optional ProWorld Impact programs in remote villages
We offer organized trips at the beginning of your program, with the remaining weekends left free for you to choose your own adventure.
