My husband and I moved to Cibubur, Jakarta in September 2009. We got jobs with the EF school before we moved and were excited about our new adventure.

When we arrived we were picked up at the airport and taken to our 'accommodation'. I think I had tried to mentally prepare myself for what to expect but it was so much worse. The accommodation was an incredibly small apartment. It technically had 2 rooms separated by a sliding door. It had a bathroom with a toilet and a shower attached to the wall so that every time you showered the toilet got wet. Also no hot water. The kitchen was a broken 2 burner hob. It was also incredibly dirty. When we were dropped off we were just left there with no help to find the local grocery store, we needed toilet paper as there was none. The house really was gross. They didn't provide any bed sheets so we had to go buy some that day.

We started work about 3 days after we arrived. EF is more like an after school programme not a real school. They do have good materials that pretty much lay out exactly what you need to do. Your work day starts around 1pm and you plan your lessons for a little while then off to class to teach. The lessons are more fun orientated than real serious. Most of the students don't want to be there so you have to make the lessons interesting and fun.

The area we lived in was incredibly boring and you had to go into Jakarta to be able to anything. Even in Jakarta it's hard to find anything to do that's not in a mall.

The management at EF was terrible. We had to deal with horrible and greedy people who use the teachers for everything they've got. They wil try and manipulate you. We had an experience where they even changed our contract without telling us. Luckily we had a copy of our previous contract.

We would recommend that if you want to teach in an EF in Indonesia you try and get located in Bali. It's much better there, more things to do and it's more relaxed.
