Program Description

ProWorld - Teach Underprivileged Children in Ghana

Description

While access to basic education, particularly for girls, has increased in recent years, access to secondary education remains limited in many rural areas. Schools are vastly underfunded and the quality of education suffers. If you’ve ever had a teacher who believed in you, then you know the encouraging impact it has on your life. Come be that impact. Spend two weeks of your summer helping teachers and students in Ghana.

You’d get experience:

--Assisting in the classroom
--Developing curriculum
--Helping with after school programs
--Improving school operations.
--If you’re interested in a career in education, this could be the volunteer program for you.

Highlights

Cape Coast was the former capital of British colonies in Africa and home to the largest slave-trading center in Africa. Despite its sordid past, today, it is a popular college beach town, capital of Ghana’s Central Region, and home to over 100,000 people. Like any big city in an emerging country, it has its dark underbelly – inadequate healthcare for the poor, limited education resources, and trouble with pollution.

This is the tropics! The weather is hot and humid, with an annual average of 30ºC (86ºF) and two extensive rainy seasons.

Language and Cultural Development Training Options:

Even though the common language is English, it is helpful to know some Fante, the local dialect. ProWorld Ghana provides weekly Fante classes to help volunteers communicate with more compassion and efficiency. Additional classes are offered on volunteering, culture and development, as well as Batik tie and dye classes, West African drumming, and dancing.

Weekends are yours for exploring this spirited country. Some of our volunteer favorites are:

--A visit to the local forts and markets in Cape Coast
--Tour slave trade sites: Assin Manso, Cape Coast Castle, and Elmina Castle
--Canopy Walk in Kakum National Park
--Relax on the beach
--Road trip to Nzulezo, the village on stilts or Accra, the nation’s capital
--Optional ProWorld Impact programs in remote villages
--We offer organized trips at the beginning of your program, with the remaining
weekends left free for you to choose your own adventure
