Teach in China with GeoVisions & Receive Your TEFL Certificate
Description
Enter the Gateway of the East. China is forever linked to its ancient civilization, friendly people, and many of the world's most revered treasures, such as The Great Wall, The Forbidden City, Terra-Cotta Warriors and the Yangtze River. China is also one of the fastest developing countries in the world where you will find spectacular architecture and towering skyscrapers right next to ancient Buddhist temples. More people in China now use the Internet than in Europe and China has more speakers of English as a second language than America has native English speakers. China is the fourth largest country on Earth and contains the worlds largest population at over 1.3 billion people. This diverse and dynamic land also has an incredibly high demand for English Teachers.
GeoVisions' Teach in China program is a unique opportunity that caters to people who want to spend an extended period of time in China, working in schools, all the while being immersed in Chinese culture as well as having the chance to explore China in a way that a normal tourist cannot. The program provides the flexibility of being able to visit different places in China but with the security of quality work, support, a monetary allowance, accommodation and meals.
The program is designed with an influence on cultural exchange and is aimed at providing work in schools for groups of people who otherwise may not be able to. The training program that has been devised allows for this. It is not a teacher recruitment program, and all candidates need to understand the emphasis on cultural exchange; and the need to be in such a program to receive a visa that allows them the experience, with a monetary allowance, in schools. In addition, the support network, organized cultural programs and training make this a unique program for those seeking to spend time in China and learn about the culture while also making a contribution to the Chinese through language teaching and cultural exchange.
The program includes a four-week orientation that grants you your TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certificate as well as a guaranteed placement as a Teaching Intern. You can choose to work for either a half or full year. You will be given accommodation and meals during training, orientation and teacher placement. You will also be paid a teachers intern allowance of approximately USD 300 per month (2000 RMB). Up to a USD 325 bonus for finishing a six-month program and a USD 650 bonus for finishing the twelve-month program will be given at the end of your stay. Other features of the program include conversational Mandarin classes and a 24-hour emergency support and translation service (English/Mandarin).
Your classroom duties will include teaching conversational English lessons either alone or with a Chinese English teacher. You will be expected to spend an average of 20 hours a week in the classroom and at least five hours a week of preparation time for the lessons. You will have to attend meetings as required and you should plan to spend some time participating in after school activities.
As with all employment, it is the employer who makes the final choice and participants are not able to choose the specific school that they wish to attend. However, participants are able to nominate the order of their placement preferences, which will be chosen from different regions throughout China. These choices are not guaranteed but used as a guideline within a complex placement process with the schools.
Teaching English is a sought-after occupation in China and it could open many career paths for you. Depending on your educational qualifications and your successful completion of the program, you could use your experience in China to teach your way around the world. Come explore and learn about this amazing country that combines natural beauty, enchanting historical locations and modern, exciting development. What better way to experience the fastest-growing economy in the world than to live and work in it?
Highlights
Accommodation will usually be furnished shared teachers accommodation (bedding/linen provided), with common living area on the school grounds. This is the typical standard, but may vary from location to location. It must be acknowledged that China is a developing nation and at times the accommodation will be rudimentary by western standards. Accommodation will have been inspected in all locations that is designated for participants. Participants will have to share a room in the training period, but once in a school it is likely (but not always) they will have a separate bedroom.
3 meals per day will be supplied. This will be local food and usually served in the school dining room. Other arrangements include an allowance for food to be cooked in the apartment, with the arrangements varying between schools. The food is fresh, but will be Chinese style. It will be seasonal and mainly consist of vegetables and rice. Use of chopsticks is very important, but easy to master. Milk is generally not available and green tea is the preferred beverage. Western food will not be available in schools. It can be purchased outside the school. Catering for the needs of individuals (such as vegetarians or those with a special diet) is generally quite difficult.
An allowance, which is tax free is paid to participants. It is an amount of 2000RMB per month, which is similar to what a local Chinese teacher would receive. It will allow for a participant to have money for spending, but cannot be regarded as a high salary. Western items are expensive when compared to this allowance level. A completion bonus is also paid.
The school will pay for the transport of participants to the school from the training centre. This will be completed by the most suitable means and may include air travel, train or bus, depending on the distance. On a daily basis, as participants usually live on the school grounds, this is not required.
Basic medical services will be available through the school infirmary for minor ailments. More serious illnesses will be treated in the local hospitals, which are a reasonable standard. Medical insurance is included in your project fee.
Each school will have an emergency contact for participants. This person will be bilingual who will be able to deal with day to day issues. In addition, GeoVisions will offer 24 hour emergency contact to assist with major concerns.
Postal services in China are reasonable. Large packages and other items need to be sent direct to the participant.
Power varies between provinces, with most using a 220v system similar to Australia. Adaptors are readily available.
Mobile Phones are very common in China, with all phones on a prepaid system.
ATM machines are very common and take international credit cards (visa) and some debit cards. You can get assistance to open a bank account for participants as required, noting it is best to have a bank close to where participants are living and is best arranged after the Training Period.
Internet is provided for all in the school.
