Program Description

ProWorld - Volunteer Teaching Program in Brazil

Description

Kids who hang out on the streets after school are more likely to dropout. This ProWorld program gives them a safe place to go and the educational support to get a good education. Families in need are promised non-perishable food if their children stay in school. It’s achieved a 90% success rate so far.

Help us keep it going by:

Teaching English
Teaching dance, music, and theatre
Updating our web site
Helping in the office
Together, we can give kids the confidence and resources to have a better life than one lived on the streets. Some Portuguese is helpful, but not required; participants typically volunteer for 3-5 weeks.

Highlights

The heart of Afro-Brazilian culture, Salvador da Bahia is a cultural fusion of descendents from African slaves and Portuguese colonists. African music, religion, food, dance, and martial arts are celebrated. Come and take a class in the martial art Capoeira or watch the ritual ceremonies performed for African gods at Candomle.

Salvador's temperatures are warm year-round - with days reaching 31 C (88 F), with less humidity than interior areas. The rainy season runs from mid-December to July.

Weekends are yours for exploring this delightful country. Some of our volunteer favorites are:

Watch an outdoor Capoeira demonstration
Admire the architecture and cathedrals in Old Colonial Center
Attend a samba concert
Explore neighboring fishing villages
Take a bike ride along the coast
Relax on the beach!
Plan your trip in March and experience Carnaval. We offer organized trips at the beginning of your program, with the remaining weekends left free for you to choose your own adventure.

Living Arrangements:

Interns will live like locals with carefully screened Brazilian families. A few nights a week may be spent at your project site in a dorm-style accommodation. Short-term volunteers will live at their project site. All programs include housing, shared bath and three meals per day. Salvador is known for its fresh, cheap seafood, so expect plenty of seafood stew. Pepper is popular, so have a glass of water nearby if you’re shy with spices.

Travel Arrangements:

Participants travel to Brazil independently. Transport to and from the airport is provided.
