Description

The Teachers for Africa Program places experienced American teachers in sub-Saharan Africa at schools and universities for one academic year. The TFA Program is sponsored by the International Foundation for Education and Self-Help and funded by the United States Agency for International Development. The major goal of the TFA Program is to provide technical assistance to improve the quality of academic institutions and curriculum.

Highlights

We assist African nations in strengthening their educational systems by:

* Recruiting and assigning volunteer educators to serve for one or more academic years
* Training pre- and in-service teachers
* Continuing professional development of in-service teachers
* Strengthening local communities' education policy and management
* Providing technical assistance to nongovernmental organizations and community based organizations
* Incorporating cross-cutting themes into education curriculums, including HIV/AIDS and strengthening the rights of vulnerable populations (particularly women and children)
* Establishing teacher resource centers
* Donating books and educational supplies
* Building and rehabilitating schools

Qualifications

The program has the objective of placing up to 1,000 teachers from the United States in sub-Saharan Africa by the year 2002. Specific specialties needed include curriculum development, ESL training, teacher training, elementary and secondary education, literacy, French, information systems, sciences and engineering, health and nutrition, and administration.

While teachers participate in the TFA program on a volunteer basis, each participant is provided with the following: *Airfare for domestic and overseas travel *One week predeparture orientation in Scottsdale, Arizona *Per diem payment for each day of orientation *Predeparture / settling-in allowance of USD 450 *USD 150 reimbursement for the shipping of books and educational materials *USD 800 monthly stipend based on sub-Saharan cost of living *Insurance coverage
