Program Description

Teach English in Argentina with LanguageCorps

Description

Argentina is the home of the tango, of the wandering pampas gaucho, of suited Western businessmen sipping espresso in an elegant urban setting before setting off for ice-hiking through Patagonia over the weekend.

Buenos Aires' nine million inhabitants enjoy a cultural sophistication exhibited in its Parisian architecture, Italian heritage, and European feel. Add to this the exquisite cuisine and legendary nightlife and you can easily understand Buenos Aires' enduring popularity. It would take a lifetime to visit all the restaurants, cafes, and dance clubs the city has to offer, but that lifetime would be spent wandering broad tree-lined boulevards, marveling at marble, neoclassical facades, and enjoying world-class opera at the famous Colon Theater.

Beyond the capital, this vast and varied country stretches from the spectacular tropical waterfalls of Iguazú on the Brazilian border to the frosty town of Ushuaia in southern Tierra del Fuego. In between, you'll sample the products of the world-class wineries of Mendoza, take the famous "Train of the Clouds" to the town of Salta, and warm up after a day on the slopes with a cup of hot chocolate in Bariloche, the ski and chocolate-lovers paradise.

The training center is located in the downtown area of Buenos Aires half a block from the famous Florida Street. It is surrounded by shops, cafés and many historical buildings. Easy to access from any part of town and within walking distance from the most important and popular areas of the city, in “el centro” you will always find something interesting going on. For trips further afield, there is excellent public transportation in the city including trains, subways, buses, and even ferries to neighboring Uruguay.

Buenos Aires is mild and humid most of the year. Spring (September to November) tends to be pleasant, with temperatures ranging from 18º to 20º Celsius (64º to 68º Fahrenheit). Summer (December through February) is hot, with temperatures reaching above 30º Celsius (86º Fahrenheit), with hot and humid evenings. Fall (March through May) is nicely cool, with temperatures from 12º to 15º Celsius (54º to 59º Fahrenheit). Winter is somewhat chilly in Buenos Aires, and can be harsh in the deep south. Daytime temperatures range between 3º and 8º Celsius (38º and 46º Fahrenheit) in the city.

Living Arrangements:

During training, accommodations in a home stay or shared apartment are available.

Buenos Aires home stay families open their middle-class, often single-parent, households to our trainees. They may or may not have children living at home. All host families live in attractive homes in safe neighborhoods. In your host family's home, you will have your own bedroom and either a shared or private bathroom. You will be given a key to the house or apartment and are free to come and go as you please (though, as a guest living with a host family, you should be sure to respect the routine of the people you are staying with). Host families provide breakfast and dinner, and enjoy spending time during meals chatting with students - typically, home stays provide an excellent way to get to know the local culture and language.

After training, you will most likely rent a room in an apartment or house with other students or Argentines. Some employers will provide a room for you, either shared or single (usually in an apartment with other teachers) and provide you with a monthly stipend.

Round-trip airfare to host country is not included.

When I researched this program, I was looking for an excuse to move and live abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina. LanguageCorps gave me a trusted, legit training and initial set-up and community that made my transition abroad much smoother and more comfortable than it would have been otherwise.

I completed the class and was very well prepared to teach English. I made friends in the class who are now my best friends, two years later. I taught English to professionals for a year which was a very valuable experience. I learned so much about the English language, about international business, about the corporate world and about Argentina. This is just a broad overview - my students taught me about psychology, politics, economics, culture, travel, philosophy and we shared a lot of laughs.

After a year, I wanted to pursue a different career path, but stay in Argentina. My experience with LanguageCorps and teaching English had created a very solid foundation for my life in Buenos Aires. I discovered that my experience as a teacher was a very valuable professional stepping-stone which prepared me for my next position as a corporate recruiter.

LanguageCorps was amazing. If you open yourself up to the possibilities of living abroad, you will learn, be challenged, grow and are certain to have adventures.
