Projects Abroad Reviews and Teach Abroad Programs
In the early 1990s, some students wanted a break from study - a "gap year," although the term wasn't yet in common use. They approached their geography professor about traveling and working in Eastern Europe. The professor, Dr. Peter Slowe, had difficulty finding any opportunities for this kind of travel combined with work experience, so he set about arranging for his students to go and teach English in Romania where he knew some fellow academics. This was how Projects Abroad began in 1992.

The program was amazing, each day was a new learning experience. By the end of my two month stay I felt as part of the community. I would recommend this program to anyone. I was able to get school credit for the spanish classes I took and volunteer hours for the classes I taught. I was even given the opportunity to teach the local police english classes! On the weekends I could travel and even went to other countries such as Nicaragua. The experiences was amazing and I would do it again in a heart beat.

August 2008, I spent a month in Brasov, Romania teaching English and I had a great time! Each morning I travelled by bus to a school on the edge of the city, I taught around 15 students for about 3 hours - I spent some time most evenings making worksheets by hand ready to photocopy the next morning. After lunch, I travelled outside of the city to a rural nearby town where I helped out at childrens summer centre - playing games, chatting to the children and helping with dance classes. In the evenings I met up with other volunteers who were doing the other Projects Abroad projects, and at the weekends travelled to several places including old forts, palaces, beautiful mountains, medieval towns, and even saw brown bears (running towards us before being chased by locals back into the woods - very exciting!)
I think Eastern Europe is sometimes overlooked by english teacher, but its a beautiful and diverse place, and a great place to start travelling!
